Der englische Komponist Cipriani Potter (1792-1871) ist kein komplett unbeschriebenes Blatt in den Schallplattenkatalogen, aber viele Aufnahmen gibt es nicht. Er machte in Wien die Bekanntschaft Beethovens, der ihm genau wie der späte Mozart ein Vorbild war.

Seine in dieser Aufnahme vorzüglich klingende g-Moll-Symphonie beginnt mit einem lebhaften Allegro con spirito, dem zwei liebliche Sätze folgen, ein Andante und ein Menuett, ehe ein charmantes Rondo das Werk beendet.

Potter, der auch Pianist auftrat, komponierte brillante Stücke für sein Instrument, darunter Introduzione e Rondo (alla militaire). Es ist ein keckes Werk voller guter Einfälle, und Claire Huangci sowie das bestens aufgelegte Orchester aus Wales unter dem kräftig zupackenden Howard Griffiths liefern davon eine memorable Aufführung.

Nicht weniger charakteristisch und brillant ist die Ouvertüre zu Cymbelene, einem weniger bekannten Drama von Shakespeare, handwerklich solide gemacht, prächtig instrumentiert und effektvoll, so dass die Ouvertüre einer Beethoven-Ouvertüre Konkurrenz machen kann. Griffiths dirigiert sie spannungsvoll und das Orchester antwortet engagiert.

The English composer Cipriani Potter (1792-1871) is not completely absent from the recording catalogs, but there are not many releases either. Potter made the acquaintance of Beethoven in Vienna, who was a model for him just like the late Mozart.
His G minor Symphony, which becomes quite exquisite in this recording, opens with a lively Allegro con spirito, followed by two lovely movements, an Andante and a Minuet, and then the final, charming Rondo.
Potter, who also performed as a pianist, composed brilliant pieces for his instrument, including Introduzione e Rondo (alla militaire). It’s a jaunty work full of good ideas, and Claire Huangci and the committed Orchestra of Wales under the vigorous Howard Griffiths deliver a memorable performance of it.
No less characteristic and brilliant is the overture to Cymbelene, a lesser-known drama by Shakespeare, solidly crafted, splendidly orchestrated and effective, so that the overture can rival a Beethoven overture. Griffiths conducts it with tension, and the orchestra responds with commitment.
