The Deutsche Oper Berlin is currently performing Katharina Thalbach’s production of Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia without a donkey, which plays an important role in the opera. As the Berliner Zeitung reported, the donkey Sina had died and they had not yet found a suitable animal to take over the role. According to the opera house, they have lost an animal that had visibly enjoyed working on stage, so it is also clear that the missing donkey was not due to protests from the animal rights group Peta, which had criticized the use of the donkey as « forced stage labor ».
