Diese CD ist eine Hommage an den in Paraguay geborenen klassischen Gitarristen und Komponisten Agustín Barrios, der sein Leben der Musik und dem Schreiben von Gedichten widmete. Er komponierte mehr als 300 Lieder, für die er zuerst den Text und dann die Gitarrenbegleitung schrieb. Daneben entstanden zahllose Werke für Sologitarre.
Seine Werke sind größtenteils spätromantisch, obwohl er bis weit ins zwanzigste Jahrhundert hinein gelebt hat. Viele von ihnen sind auch Bearbeitungen süd- und mittelamerikanischer Volksmusik oder stehen unter deren Einfluss.
John Williams, der wesentlich zur Renaissance des Komponisten beigetragen hat, hat über Barrios gesagt: « Als Gitarrist/Komponist ist Barrios der Beste von allen, unabhängig von der Epoche. Seine Musik ist besser geformt, sie ist poetischer, sie ist mehr von allem! Und sie ist mehr von all diesen Dingen auf eine zeitlose Art und Weise. »
Zum Programm, das Thibaut Garcia spielt, gehört auch das von Johann Sebastian Bach inspirierte La Catedral aus dem Jahr 1921. Es gilt weithin als Barrios’ Hauptwerk. Andrés Segovia sagte darüber: « 1921 spielte ich in Buenos Aires in dem Saal La Argentina, der für seine gute Akustik für Gitarre bekannt war und in dem Barrios nur wenige Wochen vor mir konzertiert hatte. Er wurde mir von seinem Sekretär Elbio Trapani vorgestellt. Auf meine Einladung hin besuchte mich Barrios im Hotel und spielte mir auf meiner eigenen Gitarre mehrere seiner Kompositionen vor, von denen mich das großartige Konzertstück The Cathedral, dessen erster Satz ein Andante ist, wie eine Einleitung und ein Präludium, und ein zweites, sehr virtuoses Stück, das sich ideal für das Repertoire eines jeden Konzertgitarristen eignet, besonders beeindruckte. Barrios hatte versprochen, mir sofort eine Kopie des Werks zu schicken (ich hatte noch zehn Tage Zeit, bevor ich meine Reise fortsetzte), aber ich habe nie eine Kopie erhalten. »
Thibaut Garcias Spiel zeichnet sich sowohl durch Poesie als auch durch eine große Phantasie aus. Er lotet die Tiefen mit großer Ausdrucksfreiheit aus, und man kann sein interpretatorisches Gespür nur bewundern. Technisch überlegen, kann er sich ganz auf die Musik konzentrieren, die er mit schönem Ton, bewundernswerten, dynamischen Schattierungen und einer lyrischen Qualität der melodischen Linie spielt.
This CD is a tribute to the Paraguayan-born classical guitarist and composer Agustín Barrios, who dedicated his life to music and poetry. He composed more than 300 songs, for which he first wrote the lyrics and then the guitar accompaniment. In addition, he wrote countless works for solo guitar.
His works are mostly late romantic, although he lived well into the twentieth century. Many of them are also arrangements of South and Central American folk music or are under its influence.
John Williams, who contributed significantly to the composer’s renaissance, has said of Barrios, « As a guitarist/composer, Barrios is the best of them all, regardless of era. His music is better formed, it is more poetic, it is more of everything! And it is more of all these things in a timeless way. »
The program Thibaut Garcia will play also includes the 1921 La Catedral, inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach, widely considered Barrios’ major work. Andrés Segovia said of it, « In 1921 I played in Buenos Aires in the hall La Argentina, which was known for its good acoustics for guitar and where Barrios had given a concert just a few weeks before me. He was introduced to me by his secretary Elbio Trapani. At my invitation, Barrios visited me at the hotel and played several of his compositions for me on my own guitar, of which I was particularly impressed by the magnificent concert piece The Cathedral, the first movement of which is an andante, like an introduction and a prelude, and a second, very virtuosic piece ideal for the repertoire of any concert guitarist. Barrios had promised to send me a copy of the work immediately (I still had ten days before continuing my trip), but I never received a copy. »
Thibaut Garcia’s playing is characterized by both poetry and a great imagination. He plumbs the depths with great freedom of expression, and one can only admire his interpretive flair. Technically superior, he can concentrate entirely on the music, which he plays with beautiful tone, admirable dynamic shadings and a lyrical quality of the melodic line.
