Auf ihrem Album Songs of the Clown spüren Verena Tönjes und Daria Tudor dem Pierrot, einer Figur der Commedia dell‘arte des 15. und 16. Jahrhunderts nach. Doch wenn er anfangs als intrigant daherkam, ist der Pierrot, der in den Liedern dieses Programms auftaucht, vor allem ein sensibler Einzelgänger, bei dem Lachen und Weinen nahe beieinanderliegen. Bittere Süße und Melancholie, Nachdenklichkeit, Schalk, der Pierrot verkörpert all das und noch viel mehr, und wenn es ums Verkörpern geht, ist die Mezzosopranistin Verena Tönjes eine Meisterin in ihrem Fach. Als hochbegabte Sängerschauspielerin schlüpft sie mühelos von einer Facette der Figur in die andere.
Die exquisite Darbietung der Sängerin wird kongenial unterstützt von der rumänischen Pianistin Daria Tudor. Die beiden haben sich nicht nur eine Programm ausgedacht, das total effektiv ist, sie beleben es auch auf hohem Niveau und mit einer Geschmacks- Stilsicherheit, die wunderbar von einem Komponisten zum anderen wechselt. Tönjes gestaltet die Lieder mit allen ihr zur Verfügung stehenden Mitteln, mit einer den ganzen Dynamik-Bereich umfassenden Stimmgebung, einer reichen Palette an Stimmfarben und einer dezidiert gestalterisch eingesetzten Atemtechnik. Ihr Gesang ist untadelig, hochexpressiv und kommt mit dem Klavierpart voll zum Tragen.
On their album Songs of the Clown, Verena Tönjes and Daria Tudor trace Pierrot, a figure from the Commedia dell’Arte of the 15th and 16th centuries. But if he seemed scheming at first, the Pierrot who appears in the songs of this program is above all a sensitive loner, in whom laughter and tears lie close together. Bitter sweetness and melancholy, thoughtfulness, mischievousness, Pierrot embodies all this and much more, and when it comes to embodying it, mezzo-soprano Verena Tönjes is a master in her field. A highly talented singer-actress, she slips effortlessly from one facet of the character to another.
The singer’s exquisite performance is congenially supported by Romanian pianist Daria Tudor. The two have not only come up with a program that is totally effective, they also bring it to life at a high level and with a sense of taste and style that switches wonderfully from one composer to another. Tönjes performs the songs with all the means at her disposal, with a vocal style that encompasses the entire dynamic range, a rich palette of vocal colors, and a decidedly creative breathing technique. Her singing is impeccable, highly expressive, and comes into its own with the piano part.
