Die Mandoline wurde in Italien erfunden und entwickelt, bevor sie sich in ganz Kontinentaleuropa verbreitete. Als Hauptstadt eines an Italien grenzenden Reiches kamen Musiker nach Wien, um dort zu arbeiten, zu komponieren und zu lehren. Wien war im späten 18. Jahrhundert das Zentrum der Entwicklung des Mandolinenspiels.
Zu den Komponisten und Interpreten, die dort arbeiteten oder deren Werke erhalten sind, gehören Giovanni Hoffmann, Giuseppe Bresbert und Johann Conrad Schlick, deren Musik neben jener einiger anonym gebliebener Komponisten zu hören ist.
Die Interpretationen auf diesem Album sind ein Genuss. Der Klang von Alla Tolkachevas Barockmandoline ist besonders attraktiv und delikat. Das Gleichgewicht zwischen der Mandolinen und den Begleitinstrumenten ist gut ausbalanciert, ohne dass eines von beiden in den Vordergrund tritt.
The mandolin was invented and developed in Italy before spreading throughout continental Europe. As the capital of an empire bordering Italy, musicians came to Vienna to work, compose and teach. Vienna was the center of mandolin playing development in the late 18th century.
Composers and performers who worked there or whose works survive include Giovanni Hoffmann, Giuseppe Bresbert, and Johann Conrad Schlick, whose music is heard alongside that of some anonymous composers.
The interpretation on this album are a delight. The sound of Alla Tolkacheva’s baroque mandolin is particularly attractive and delicate. The balance between the mandolin and the accompanying instruments is well balanced, without either coming to the fore.
