Franz von Suppé ist immerhin durch mindestens zwei Werke bekannt, die beiden Ouvertüren Leichte Kavallerie sowie Dichter und Bauer. Aber er schrieb vieles mehr, unter anderem eine Reihe von Bühnenmusiken. Dabei handelt es sich um Werke für Sprechtheater, in die einige Musikstücke eingeflochten werden. Eines dieser Bühnenwerke ist das Schauspiel Mozart in vier Aufzügen, das aus der Feder von Leonhard Wohlmuth stammt. In diesem als Künstlerlebensbild bezeichneten Werk setzt der Autor je Akt eine Episode aus Mozarts Leben in Szene: Vater und Sohn, Brautwahl, Lob Joseph Haydns und die Requiem-Bestellung.
Suppé verwendet für die Musik ausschließlich Motive von Mozart selbst. Die zeitgenössische Presse lobte es als ein « aphoristisches Tonstück », wenn Suppé die Idee versinnbildlichte, wie Mozart in seiner Phantasie die Motive zur Zauberflöte zuflossen. Andere Zitate stammen zum Beispiel aus Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, dem Requiem, der 39. Symphonie oder einer Violinsonate. Als Zusatz wurde die Ouvertüre zu Die Afrikareise mit aufgenommen.
Die Einspielung des Janacek Philharmonischen Orchesters wird von Dario Salvi geleitet. Als Instrumentalsolisten treten die Geigerin Julie Svecena für das Concertino und Pavel Rybka für den Orgelpart in Fantasie und Erklärung hinzu. Bei allen diesen Musikern ist die Musik in Händen, die sowohl den Charakter der Musik von Mozart zum Klingen bringen wie sie auch den Charme des Anteils von Suppé an der Bühnenmusik verdeutlichen können. Damit geben sie im Zeitraffer eine punktuelle Übersicht über das Werk von Mozart.
Franz von Suppé is known for at least two works, the two overtures Light Cavalry and Poet and Peasant. But he wrote much more, including a number of stage musics. These are works for spoken theater in which some pieces of music are interwoven. One of these stage works is the play Mozart in Four Acts, penned by Leonhard Wohlmuth. In this work, described as a portrait of the artist’s life, the author stages an episode from Mozart’s life in each act: father and son, choice of bride, praise of Joseph Haydn and the commission of the Requiem.
Suppé uses exclusively motifs by Mozart himself for the music. The contemporary press praised it as an « aphoristic tone piece » when Suppé symbolized the idea of how the motifs for the Magic Flute went to Mozart in his imagination. Other quotations come, for example, from Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, the Requiem, the 39th Symphony, or a violin sonata. As an addition, the overture to Die Afrikareise (The Journey to Africa) is included.
The recording of the Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Dario Salvi. Instrumental soloists join with violinist Julie Svecena for the Concertino and Pavel Rybka for the organ part in Fantasia and Declaration. These musicians are able to bring out both the character of Mozart’s music and the charm of Suppé’s part in the incidental music. In this way, they give a selective overview of Mozart’s work in fast motion.
