The director of Armenia’s National Opera and Ballet Theater resigned on Tuesday, one week after the strike which hit the opera house in protest against the pension reform decided by the government. Kamo Hovannisian said he decided to quit because of having reached retirement age.
The one day strike resulted in the cancellation of an opera performance that had been scheduled for February 10. The strike ended when the unpopular measure was suspended and Deputy Culture Minister Artur Poghosian promised 20 percent pay rises to the musicians and employees of the opera.
