24-year-old British conductor Alexander Prior will be the next Music Director of the Canadian Edmonton Symphony Orchestra from the 2017-2018 season. He will succeed the outgoing conductor Bill Eddins who will be Music Director emeritus.
A graduate of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, Prior has been awarded Conducting Fellowships at the Boston Symphony’s Tanglewood Music Center as well as the Aspen Music Festival. In the 2009/10 season, he served as Assistant Conductor at the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. He has worked closely with Thomas Dausgaard, Robert Spano, Michael Tilson Thomas Nicholas McGegen and Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos.
Prior is also a composer. At the age of 13, his ballet Mowgli, commissioned by the Moscow State Ballet, received international acclaim.
