Die Soloharfenistin der Florida Symphony, Courtney Hershey Bress, spielt als Solistin in dieser ersten Einspielung von Harp of Ages des 1954 geborenen amerikanischen Komponisten Michael Daugherty.
Das Konzert hat sieben Sätze und ist etwa eine halbe Stunde lang. In jedem Satz werden ein anderes Genre und eine andere Musikkultur vorgestellt, inspiriert von Harfenspielern und fiktiven Figuren, die Harfe spielen, wobei mehrere Kontinente und 3.000 Jahre durchquert werden. Daugherty: « Ich wollte wirklich die Vielfalt der Harfe zeigen, vor allem, weil sie eines der ältesten Instrumente ist. »
So gibt es einen von der Musik des Nahen Ostens inspirierten Satz, Musik im altgriechischen Stil, und nicht zu überhören sind an anderen Stellen die Einflüsse von Popmusik, Blues und Filmmusik
Der letzte Satz des Konzerts trägt den Titel Irish Wedding und zeigt auf die die Bedeutung der Harfe in der irischen Kultur hin.
Das ergibt ein sehr abwechslungsreiches, extrem gut geschriebenes und fantasievolles Werk, unmittelbar zugänglich und unterhaltsam.
Florida Symphony principal harpist Courtney Hershey Bress is the soloist in this first recording of Harp of Ages by American composer Michael Daugherty, born in 1954.
The concerto has seven movements and is approximately half an hour in length. Each movement introduces a different genre and musical culture, inspired by harpists and fictional characters who play the harp, spanning several continents and 3,000 years. Daugherty: « I really wanted to show the diversity of the harp, especially since it’s one of the oldest instruments. »
There is a movement inspired by the music of the Middle East, music in the style of ancient Greece, and influences from pop, blues, and film scores cannot be ignored at other points.
The final movement of the concerto is entitled ‘Irish Wedding’ and refers to the importance of the harp in Irish culture.
The result is a highly varied, extremely well-written and imaginative work that is immediately accessible and entertaining.
