(Remy Franck) – Gerald Hugh Trywhitt-Wilson (1883-1950), Lord Berners, ein Komponist von Balletten, Klavierwerken und Liedern, ist nicht nur bekannt, weil er in seinem Rolls Royce ein Clavichord einbauen ließ. Er hat auch eine durchaus einfallsreiche Musik geschrieben, ohne freilich einen eigenen Stil zu entwickeln. Er ahmte vor allem nach (Ravel, Offenbach u.a.m.) hatte aber einen sehr sicheren Sinn für die Melodie und die Klangwirkung, so dass er mit seiner eklektischen Musik durchaus ansprechen konnte.
The Triumph of Neptune ist eines seiner wichtigsten Werke. Die Ballettmusik wurde von Serge Diaghilev in Auftrag gegeben und von Georges Balanchine choreographiert. Sie ist sehr klangmalerisch und kommt in der stimmungs- und schwungvollen Interpretation unter David Lloyd-Jones bestens zur Geltung
Das mit einem kleinen Ensemble besetzte L’uomo dai baffi ist ein Ballett für Puppen und enthält eine effektvolle Musik mit vielen guten Einfällen. Die von Philip Lanes orchestrierten Valses bourgeoises und die Polka bieten eine etwas schräge und unterhaltsame Musik, die in den vitalen Darbietungen ebenfalls sehr attraktiv wird.
Gerald Hugh Trywhitt-Wilson (1883-1950), Lord Berners, a composer of ballets, piano works and songs, is not only known because he had a clavichord installed in his Rolls Royce. He also wrote quite imaginative music, without, admittedly, developing a style of his own. He mainly imitated (Ravel, Offenbach, etc.) but had a very sure sense of melody and sound effect, so that he could definitely appeal with his eclectic music.
The Triumph of Neptune is one of his most important works. The ballet music was commissioned by Serge Diaghilev and choreographed by Georges Balanchine. It is very picturesque in sound and comes into its own in the atmospheric and sweeping interpretation under David Lloyd-Jones
L’uomo dai baffi, cast with a small ensemble, is a ballet for puppets and contains effective music with many good ideas. The Valses bourgeoises orchestrated by Philip Lanes and the Polka offer somewhat quirky and entertaining music that also becomes very attractive in these vital performances.

Seine musikalischen Studien hat Lord Berners bei Alfredo Casella und Igor Stravinsky gemacht, dem er auch den Auftrag der Ballets Russes für die Musik zu The Triumph of Neptune zu verdanken hat.
In England gib es das besondere Genre der Light Music – kurze, gefällige Stücke in einem angenehmen Tonfall, dennoch exzellent gearbeitet und keineswegs anspruchslos. Diese Tradition hört man auch in The Triumph of Neptune, eine Harlekinade. Dementsprechend kurzweilig, lebhaft ist die Musik. Die English Northern Philharmonia bietet eine treffende, quicklebendige Interpretation der Musik – immer wieder mit einem Augenzwinkern britischen Humors.
1918 – acht Jahre vor The Triumph of Neptune – schrieb Lord Berners die Musik zum Puppenspiel L’uomo dai baffi – Der Mann mit dem Schnauzer. Dieses Werk ist wesentlich avangardistischer, setzt mehr auf Stimmungen, auf die atmosphärische Untermalung unterschiedlichster Situationen und Gefühlslagen.
Auch hier treffen David Lloyd-Jones und die English Northern Philharmonia genau den Ton: zurückhaltender, intimer, mit der nötigen Tiefe. Der Zuhörer muss nicht einmal das Originallibretto zu dieser Komposition kennen, dennoch vermitteln die Interpreten ihm das Gefühl, selbst die Fäden der Puppen in der Hand zu halten und seine eigene Geschichte zu erleben.
Lord Berners is nobody else than the multi-talented Gerald Hugh Tyrwhitt-Wilson, painter, writer and composer. Lord Berners studied music with Alfredo Casella and Igor Stravinsky, to whom he owes the commission from the Ballets Russes for the music to The Triumph of Neptune.In England there is a special genre of light music – short, pleasing pieces in a pleasant tone, yet excellently crafted and by no means undemanding. The harlequinade TheTriumph of Neptune belongs to this genre. Accordingly, the music is entertaining and lively. The English Northern Philharmonia offers a sparkling interpretation of the music – always with a wink of British humor.
In 1918 – eight years before The Triumph of Neptune – Lord Berners wrote the music for the puppet show L’uomo dai baffi – The Man with the Moustache. This work is much more avant-garde, relying more on moods, on the atmospheric painting of a wide variety of situations and emotional states. Here, too, David Lloyd-Jones and the English Northern Philharmonia hit the right note: more restrained, more intimate, with the necessary depth. The listener does not even need to know the original libretto to this composition, yet the performers give him the feeling of holding the puppet strings in his own hands and experiencing his own story.
