Mozart schrieb seine Streichquartette KV 589 und KV 590 im Auftrag von König Friedrich Wilhelm II., der ein Amateur-Cellist war. Dennoch soll man nicht meinen, es handle sich um ‘leichte’ Stücke, im Gegenteil, sie sind sehr anspruchsvoll und geben dem Cello, dem Instrument des Königs, eine wichtige Rolle.
Anders als in Aufnahmen, die zupackender und dramatischer sind, legen die Dorics viel Wert auf Mozarts elegante und raffinierte Schreibweise. Das Spiel, das durchaus auch kräftigere Akzente setzten kann und manchmal recht drängend ist, vermittelt bei aller Lebhaftigkeit nie das Gefühl von Eile oder Hektik, sondern begeistert allgemein durch seine Schönheit, die von innen heraus zu leuchten scheint und durch die Ausgewogenheit und Klarheit der Phrasierungskunst, der Klangqualität und des Ausdrucks.
Mozart’s String Quartets K. 589 and K. 590 were commissioned by King Frederick William II (Friedrich Wilhelm II.), who was an amateur cellist. Yet one should not think that these are ‘easy’ pieces; on the contrary, they are very demanding and give an important role to the cello, the king’s instrument.
Unlike recordings that are more gripping and dramatic, the Dorics put a lot of emphasis on Mozart’s elegant and refined writing. For all its liveliness the playing, which can be quite forceful in its accents and sometimes quite urgent, never conveys a sense of haste or hurry, but is generally inspiring for its beauty, which seems to glow from within, and for the balance and clarity of the art of phrasing, sound quality and expression.
