The English National Opera, which recently lost 100% of its Art Council England funding for the 2023-26 cycle, will close permanently in April next year if it is forced to move out of London, chair Harry Brünjes has warned.
At an All-Party Parliamentary Group for opera, Brünjes said the idea of moving the ENO out of London needed to be « flattened » and that the Arts Council’s recent funding cut was not about relocation but about « closing down the organisation ».
ENO is a full-time repertory opera company, based at the London Coliseum near Covent Garden, which offers a variety of English-language opera. Now 600 jobs across all departments are about to be lost.
