Der finnische Dirigent Mikko Franck und das Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France liefern mit diesem Album eine Shostakovich-Interpretation, die sich wirklich hören lassen kann. Die 14. Symphonie, komponiert für Streichorchester und Schlagzeug, sowie für Sopran und Bass, ist ohne Zweifel eine von Shostakovichs besten Symphonien. « Der Tod erwartet jeden von uns. Ich kann nichts Gutes darin sehen, dass unser Leben so endet, und das ist es, was ich in diesem Werk vermitteln will.“ So der Komponist über seine 14. Symphonie, die auf Texten von Federico Garcia Lorca, Guillaume Appolinaire, Wilhelm Küchelbecker und Rainer Maria Rilke beruht.
Francks Interpretation ist gewollt zurückhaltend und tief empfunden; das Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France setzt die düsteren Stimmungen hervorragend in ein sehr dunkles Klanggewand um, das wiederum exzellent zu der schwarz-dunklen Stimme von Matthias Goerne passt, der zwar Bariton ist, hier aber eine Schwärze erreicht, die an den legendären Bass Gottlob Frick erinnert.
Asmik Grigorian ist ebenfalls eine sehr einfühlsame und empathische Solistin mit einer wunderschönen Stimme.
Dank der mustergültigen Interpretation, welche die Dimension der Hoffnungslosigkeit und des Todes als definitives Ende allen Seins auf ergreifendste Weise darstellt, sowie der klaren Klangbildes der Tonaufnahme muss diese Einspielung der 14. Symphonie zu den besten der Diskographie gerechnet werden.
Ergänzt wird die Symphonie mit den Fünf Fragmenten op. 42, einer kurzen Orchestersuite von neun Minuten, die als Vorarbeit zur 4. Symphonie zu verstehen ist.
With this album, Finnish conductor Mikko Franck and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France deliver a Shostakovich interpretation that is truly worth listening to. The 14th Symphony, composed for string orchestra and percussion, as well as soprano and bass, is without a doubt one of Shostakovich’s best symphonies. « Death awaits each of us. I can see nothing good in our lives ending like this, and that is what I want to convey in this work. » So says the composer about his 14th symphony, based on texts by Federico Garcia Lorca, Guillaume Appolinaire, Wilhelm Küchelbecker and Rainer Maria Rilke.
Franck’s interpretation is deliberately restrained and deeply felt; the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France superbly translates the somber moods into a very dark sound, which in turn is an excellent match for the black and dark voice of Matthias Goerne, who is a baritone but here achieves a blackness reminiscent of the legendary bass Gottlob Frick.
Asmik Grigorian is also a very sensitive and empathetic soloist with a beautiful voice.
Thanks to the exemplary interpretation, which portrays the dimension of hopelessness and death as the definitive end of all being in the most poignant way, as well as the clear sound image of the recording, this recording of the 14th Symphony must be counted among the best in the discography.
The symphony is complemented by the Five Fragments op. 42, a short orchestral suite of nine minutes, which is to be understood as a preparatory work for the 4th Symphony.
