The director of the Chorégies d’Orange, Raymond Duffaut, resigned over a conflict with the city which is governed by the Ligue du Sud, a far right party, which is undertaking every possible effort in order to get the festival under control.
Duffaut said that the contribution of the city to the festival has not been upgraded in 20 years. And in 1995, while Jacques Bompard was elected mayor of Orange, he was running for president of the festival, but was not elected. Since this episode, he has suspended the city’s contribution to help the festival. The French press also announces that, judging the current situation as abnormal, the Ministry of Culture could withdraw its subvention, which would be the end of the festival.
