The NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo has announced that Italian conductor Fabio Luisi, 62, will become its new chief conductor from September 2022. Luisi will enter a three-year contract with NHK’s orchestra from September next year. Prior to that, the orchestra plans to invite him to lead concerts in Japan from November this year. Luisi is scheduled to conduct Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in December.
Luisi has collaborated with the NHK Symphony Orchestra seven times since 2001. He will become its second-ever chief conductor after Paavo Järvi who took this job in 2015.
Luisi is the Music Director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Generalmusikdirektor of the Opernhaus Zürich (terminating at the end of the season 2020-2021) and Principal Conductor of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra.
