Der Brite Gerard Schurmann (1924-2020) ist vor allem bekannt durch seine Kompositionen für Filme wie Die gelbe Hölle, Das schwarze Museum, Konga, Zwischenfall im Atlantik oder Sturm auf die eiserne Küste. Daneben hat er auch symphonische Musik komponiert.
Das Album beginnt mit der brillanten, von Blechbläsern dominierten Konzertouvertüre Man in the Sky, ein Derivat aus einer Filmmusik über einen Testpiloten der Flugzeugindustrie.
Das zweisätzige Klavierkonzert wurde für den Pianisten John Ogdon (1937 – 1989) geschrieben, der das Werk 1973 mit dem Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra unter Paavo Berglund uraufführte. Der etwas geschwätzige schnelle und fürs Klavier virtuose Satz geht einem ruhigen und introvertierten Molto adagio voraus, das thematisch charakteristischer ist als der erste Satz.
Romancing the Strings (2015) besteht aus sechs kurzen Variationen über ein Originalthema aus Schurmanns Filmmusik für einen Walt-Disney-Abenteuerfilm. Nach den Worten des Komponisten soll Romancing the Strings « Gefühle einer leidenschaftlichen und wehmütig-nostalgischen Romantik vermitteln ». Es ist ein wirklich schönes Streicherwerk, das hier in einer feinfühlig gespielten Interpretation zu hören ist.
Gaudiana (2000/01) ist eine Reihe von symphonischen Studien für Orchester, die durch das Werk des katalanischen Architekten Antoni Gaudí inspiriert sind, insbesondere von der unfertigen Kathedrale La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Das ergab ein sehr facettenreiches Werk, das mit einem Choral beginnt. Ab dem zweiten Satz wird die Musik kontrastreicher zwischen brillanter Rhythmik und langsamen, sehr stimmungsvollen Teilen. Das BBC Philharmonic spielt ganz hervorragend unter der inspirierten Leitung von Ben Gernon.

The album opens with the brilliant, brass-dominated concert overture Man in the Sky, a derivative of a movie score about an airline pilot.
The two-movement Piano Concerto was written for pianist John Ogdon (1937 – 1989), who premiered the work in 1973 with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under Paavo Berglund. The somewhat chatty, fast and virtuosic movement for piano precedes a quiet and introverted Molto Adagio, which is thematically more characteristic than the first movement.
Romancing the Strings (2015) consists of six short variations on an original theme from Schurmann’s score for a Walt Disney adventure film. According to the composer, Romancing the Strings is intended to « convey feelings of passionate and wistful nostalgic romanticism. It is a truly beautiful work for strings, and it is heard here in a sensitive interpretation.
Gaudiana (2000/01) is a series of symphonic studies for orchestra inspired by the work of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, in particular the unfinished cathedral La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. The result is a multi-faceted work that begins with a chorale. From the second movement, the music becomes more contrasting, with brilliant rhythms and slow, very atmospheric sections. The BBC Philharmonic plays superbly under the inspired baton of Ben Gernon.
