Gibt man bei Google ‘Homage to Franco’ ein, gelangt man zunächst zu Seiten über den spanischen Faschisten und Diktator. Doch hier geht es um den italienischen Komponisten Franco Donatoni (1927-2000), bei dem viele bekannte Musiker studiert haben, u.a. Giuseppe Sinopoli, Pascal Dusapin, Esa-Pekka Salonen und Magnus Lindberg. Diese CD vereint Werke von italienischen und japanischen Komponisten, die entweder bei Donatoni studierten, in Workshops mit ihm arbeiteten oder von ihm beeinflusst wurden.

Die 13 kurzen Werke (sie dauern zwischen 37 Sekunden und sechseinhalb Minuten) ehren das Andenken an den Italiener und feiern sein künstlerisches Vermächtnis. Die Musik ist mehr oder weniger modern und wechselt von sehr rhythmischen, manchmal motorischen Stücke zu solchen, die introspektive Stimmungsbilder vermitteln. Die meisten Stücke zeichnen sich durch eine gewisse Fragilität aus, die Kumi Uchimoto sehr gut wiedergibt. Von Donatoni scheinen aber alle hier vertretenen Komponisten die Klarheit der Textur und das bei aller Intellektualität dennoch auch das Melodiöse übernommen zu haben.

But this is about the Italian composer Franco Donatoni (1927-2000), with whom many well-known musicians studied, including Giuseppe Sinopoli, Pascal Dusapin, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Magnus Lindberg. This CD brings together works by Italian and Japanese composers who either studied with Donatoni, worked with him in workshops, or were influenced by him.
The 13 short works (they range in length from 37 seconds to six and a half minutes) honor the memory of the Italian composer and celebrate his artistic legacies. The music is more or less modern, alternating from very rhythmic, sometimes motoric pieces to those that convey introspective moods. Most of the pieces are characterized by a certain fragility that Kumi Uchimoto expresses very well. Notably all the composers represented here seem to have adopted the main characteristics from Donatoni’s music, the clarity of texture and the melodiousness that, for all its intellectuality, is nevertheless absent.
