Das 2008 gegründete und in Köln beheimatete Fukio Saxophonquartett arbeitet gerne mit zeitgenössischen Komponisten zusammen und hat so bereits dazu beigetragen, eine ansehnliche neue Literatur für Saxophonquartett zu schaffen.
Das Programm beginnt mit einem musikalischen Aperitivo der besonderen Art, acht reizvollen, postminimalistischen Tapas des amerikanischen Komponisten Marc Mellits (*1966), die mit feiner Rhythmik und warmen Klängen attraktiv werden. Im elegischen Entr’acte von Caroline Shaw (*1982) zeigen die Fukios, wie schön sie auf ihren Instrumenten singen können. Es folgt das technisch anspruchsvolle, 10 Minuten lange Saxophonquartett von Georg Friedrich Haas (*1953), dessen ‘perforierte Rhythmik’ – so der Komponist – die vier Saxophonisten mit viel Raffinement umsetzen.
Der Amerikaner William Albright (1944-1998) komponierte sein Stück Fantasy Etudes in den Jahren 1992/93. Albright sagte, er habe « beabsichtigt, das Saxophon auf die Seite zu drehen » mit Anklängen an « Highland-Dudelsäcke, Dampfmaschinen, viktorianische Pumpenorgeln und den Big-Band-Klängen von Fernseh-Polizeidramen der 1950er Jahre. » Diese Klangexploration zu verfolgen ist für den Hörer ein hoch interessantes Unterfangen. Die sechs Fantasien mit einem Präludium sind voller unerwarteter Wendungen, mal zerklüftet und kantig, mal von überraschender Klangpoesie. Die Interpretation des Fukio Quartetts ist grandios.
Den vier Saxophonisten ist damit eine spannende Produktion gelungen, die im wunderbaren Surroundsound von Manfred Schumacher alles hat, um nicht nur eingeschworene Freunde des Saxophons zu begeistern.
Founded in 2008 and based in Cologne, Germany, the Fukio Saxophone Quartet enjoys working with contemporary composers and has already helped to create a respectable body of new literature for their instruments.
The program begins with a musical aperitivo of a special kind, eight delightful, post-minimalist Tapas by American composer Marc Mellits (b. 1966), which become attractive with fine rhythms and warm sounds. In the elegiac Entr’acte by Caroline Shaw (b. 1982), the Fukios show how beautifully they can sing on their instruments. This is followed by the technically demanding, 10-minute Saxophone Quartet by Georg Friedrich Haas (*1953), whose ‘perforated rhythms’ – according to the composer – are realized by the four saxophonists with great refinement.
American William Albright (1944-1998) composed his piece Fantasy Etudes in 1992/93. Albright said he « intended to turn the saxophone on its side » with echoes of « Highland bagpipes, steam engines, Victorian pump organs, and the big band sounds of 1950s television police dramas. » Following this exploration of sound is a highly interesting endeavor for the listener. The six fantasies with a prelude are full of unexpected twists, sometimes jagged and angular, sometimes of surprising sound poetry. The Fukio Quartet’s interpretation is magnificent.
The four saxophonists have thus succeeded in creating an exciting production which, in Manfred Schumacher’s wonderful surround sound, has everything to delight not only sworn friends of the saxophone.
