In 2016, Valery Gergiev was the best earning cultural personality in Russia, according to the Russian Ministry of Culture. His declared annual income was 154.45 million rubles (€ 2.31 mio). In 2015 he declared 130 million rubles). The next highest income on the musicians’ list is the one of Vladimir Spivakov, music director of the National Philharmonic Orchestra, with 76.14 million rubles (€ 1.17).
At the same time, Russian media report that, as it happened in previous years, the Ministry of Culture has not paid cultural salaries since the beginning of 2017.
