Diese Aufnahme stammt vom Donizetti-Festival 2023 in Bergamo. Alfredo il Grande ist eine Oper, mit der der damals 26-jährige Komponist 1823 am Theater San Carlo in Neapel debütierte. Die Oper war nicht erfolgreich und geriet nicht zuletzt wegen eines schwachen Librettos bald in Vergessenheit.
Die Handlung erzählt die Geschichte eines Herrschers der englischen Geschichte, der im 9. Jahrhundert lebte: Als Gelehrter, Intellektueller und Anführer war Alfred derjenige, der das erste Gesetzbuch der Nation verfasste und das erste Buch der englischen Geschichte, die Anglo-Saxon Chronicle (Angelsächsische Chroniken), zusammenstellen ließ. Die Oper konzentriert sich auf die die dänische Invasion in England, die mit der Niederlage der Dänen durch Alfred in der Schlacht von Ethandum (878) endet.
In dieses Martialisch-Militärische wird die Liebesgeschichte von Alfred und seiner Frau Amelia eingebaut, was für sentimentale Momente sorgt.
Der Dirigent Corrado Rovaris sorgt für ein rhythmisch straffes und lebendiges Musizieren.
Die Besetzung ist beachtlich. Der Alfred, Antonino Siragusa, ist ein feiner Tenore di grazia, der in dieser Rolle mit guter Stimme und viel Ausdruckskraft durchaus punkten kann. Exzellent ist auch die Amelia von Gilda Fiume. Die Stimme ist kräftig, mit schönen Farben, und die Darstellung ist bestens gelungen. Hervorstreichen sollte man noch den sehr gute Lodovico Filippo Ravizza in der Rolle des englischen Generals Eduardo, der mit warmer, angenehm timbrierter Stimme beindruckt. Die anderen Rollen sind ebenfalls gut besetzt, so dass in dieser Aufführung wohl ein Maximum gemacht wurde, um Donizettis wenig geliebte Oper attraktiv werden zu lassen.

This recording comes from the 2023 Donizetti Festival in Bergamo. Alfredo il Grande is the opera with which the then 26-year-old composer made his debut at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples in 1823. The opera was not a success and was soon forgotten, not least because of a weak libretto.
The plot tells the story of an English ruler who lived in the 9th century: as scholar, intellectual, and leader, Alfred was the one who wrote the nation’s first code of law and compiled the first book of English history, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. The opera focuses on the Danish invasion of England, which ends with Alfred’s defeat of the Danes at the Battle of Ethandum (878).
The love story of Alfred and his wife Amelia is interwoven into this martial-military tale, which thus also includes sentimental moments.
Conductor Corrado Rovaris provides rhythmically tight and lively music.
The cast is remarkable. The Alfred, Antonino Siragusa, is a fine tenore di grazia who can certainly score in this role with his good voice and great expressiveness. Gilda Fiume’s Amelia is also excellent. The voice is powerful, with beautiful colors, and the portrayal is very successful. The very good Lodovico Filippo Ravizza in the role of the English General Eduardo, who impresses with his warm, pleasantly timbred voice, should also be highlighted. The other roles are also well cast, so that in this performance the maximum was probably done to make Donizetti’s little-loved opera attractive.
