At the music festival in Bielsko-Biala, Southern Poland, the local Festival Orchestra played Henryk Mikolaj Gorecki’s Third Symphony (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs) yesterday (13/10,) thus marking the 40th anniversary of the work’s premiere at a church in Bielsko-Biala.
It was only in the early 1990s, due to a recording by David Zinman, that the symphony had its terrific international success, breaking all popularity records. The anniversary concert was conducted by Jan Stanczyk, the composer’s grandson.
