Diese CD mit griechischer Orchestermusik des 20. Jahrhunderts beginnt mit der Komposition Dawn at the Parthenon von Solon Michaelides (1905-1979). Es ist ein stimmungsvolles Abendbild, das aber auch die majestätische architektonische und historische Kraft der Stätte zum Ausdruck bringt. Man könnte durchaus einen Vergleich mit Respighis römischen Tondichtungen ziehen.
Island Pictures für Violine & Orchester von Manolis Kalomiris (1883-1962) beginnt ebenfalls mit einem Dämmerungsbild, zunächst verträumt, lieblich und charmant, ehe eine Tanzmelodie die Musik belebt. Sehr zart und melodisch geht es dann weiter mit einem Wiegenlied, für welches Kalomiris den leicht exotischen, sehr ruhig schwingenden Tanz Kalamatianos verwendete. Dem lebendigen letzten Satz liegt der kretische Tanz Soustas zugrunde. In allen drei Sätzen bringt die Solovioline zusätzliche Farben.
Die Dodekanesische Suite von Yannis Constantinidis(1903-1984) besteht aus sechs stilvoll verarbeiteten Tanzen, die von zarter Melancholie bis zu virtuoser Musik reichen, sehr farbig und wirkungsvoll. Das gilt auch für die 5 Griechischen Tänze von Nikos Skalkottas, die in diesen Interpretationen des beachtlich aufspielenden Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra unter der Leitung seiner Chefdirigentin, der 42-jährigen Griechin Zoi Tsokanou, sehr charakteristisch werden. Und so ist dies denn eine schöne CD mit viel gefälliger und sich in traditionellen Bahnen bewegender Musik.
This CD of 20th century Greek orchestral music begins with the composition Dawn at the Parthenon by Solon Michaelides (1905-1979). It is an atmospheric evening picture, but also expresses the majestic architectural and historical power of the site. One might well draw a comparison with Respighi’s Roman tone poems.
Island Pictures for violin & orchestra by Manolis Kalomiris (1883-1962) also begins with a twilight music, at first dreamy, sweet and charming, before a dance melody makes it livelier. Very tenderly and melodically it continues with a lullaby, for which Kalomiris used the slightly exotic, very calmly swinging dance of Kalamatiano. The lively last movement is based on the Cretan dance Soustas. In all three movements the solo violin brings additional colors.
The Dodecanese Suite by Yannis Constantinidis(1903-1984) consists of six stylishly crafted dances, ranging from delicate melancholy to virtuoso music, very colorful and effective. This also applies to the 5 Greek Dances by Nikos Skalkottas, which in these interpretations of the remarkably performing Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra under the direction of its chief conductor, the 42-year-old Greek Zoi Tsokanou. And so this is a fine CD with much pleasing music that is totally traditional.
