Der amerikanische Tenor Michael Spyres singt auf dieser CD eine Folge von bekannten Arien, darunter auch solche für Bariton. Das Programm ist vielfältig und über 84 Minuten lang.

Spyres mag ganz besonders im Belcanto und auch im französischen Repertoire der Grand Opéra brillieren, er lässt sich eigentlich aber nicht in ein Fach einreihen, bleibt flexibel und hat auch ein entsprechend breites Repertoire, wie diese CD zeigt. Von lyrisch zu spinto, heroisch-dramatisch zu buffo, er kann eigentlich alles singen und brilliert in so mancher Arie mit einer ganz besonders ausgefeilten Gestaltung. Dazu zählt Rossinis Largo del factotum, das er mit großartigen Stimmverstellungen anreichert und so die Arie wirklich urkomisch werden lässt. Auffallend sind auch seine ausgesprochen gute französische Aussprache und die Klarheit seiner Artikulation, die einen jedes Wort verstehen lässt. Seine Postillon-Arie von Adam ist ein Glanzstück, das ich noch nicht oft so gut und vor allem so charakteristisch gehört habe, von den entzückenden stimmlichen Verzierungen nicht zu sprechen. Die  schwindelerregende Virtuosität in einigen Arien ist ebenso beeindruckend wie die volle und kräftige Bariton-Stimme in Verdis Tutto e deserto aus Il Trovatore. Und wenn man dann etwas weiter im Programm die Kleinzack-Arie aus Les Contes d’Hoffmann erlebt, glaubt man nicht nur eine andere Stimme, sondern einen anderen Sänger zu hören, so gut kann Spyres differenzieren und sich in die Charaktere einleben.

Mit einer präsenten Mitte, einem starken unteren Register und kräftiger Höhe kann er auch die Gralserzählung aus Lohengrin wirkungsvoll werden lassen. Er singt Aux bords lointains, also die französische Fassung mit der legendäre Georges Thill (Sohn einer aus Luxemburg nach Frankreich ausgewanderten Familie) einst einen seiner großen Erfolge feierte.

Gut umrahmt vom Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg präsentiert Spyres also eine Arien-CD, die jeden Opernfreund begeistern dürfte.

On this CD, American tenor Michael Spyres sings a set of well-known arias, including those for baritone. The program is varied and over 84 minutes long.
Spyres may excel particularly in bel canto and also in the French repertoire of the Grand Opéra, but he does not actually allow himself to be put in one category, he remains flexible and has a correspondingly broad repertoire, as this CD easily shows. From lyrical to spinto, from heroic-dramatic to buffo, he can actually sing everything and shines in many an aria with a particularly sophisticated interpretation. This includes Largo del factotum which he enriches with great vocal shifts and thus makes the aria really hilarious. Also striking are his exceptionally good French pronunciation and the clarity of his articulation, which makes one understand every word. His Postillon aria from Adam is a gem that I have not often heard so well and, above all, so characteristically, not to speak of the delightful vocal embellishments. The dizzying virtuosity in some arias is equally impressive, as is the full and powerful baritone voice in Verdi’s Tutto e deserto from Il Trovatore. And then, a little further into the program, when you experience the Kleinzack aria from Les Contes d’Hoffmann, you think you’re hearing not just a different voice but a different singer, so well can Spyres differentiate the characters.
With a present middle and a strong lower register as well as powerful treble, he can also make the Grail Narration from Lohengrin effective. He sings Aux bords lointains, the French version with which the legendary Georges Thill (son of a family that emigrated from Luxembourg to France) once celebrated one of his great successes.
Well accompanied by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, Spyres thus presents an aria CD that should delight every opera lover.
