Manchmal fragt man sich, wo ein viel beschäftigter, umtriebiger Komponist wie Beethoven die Zeit hernahm, auch noch derart kunstvolle, unterhaltsame Miniaturen zu schreiben, wie sie diese CD vorstellt, etliche davon in Ersteinspielung.

Der Bonner Meister brauchte nicht immer die große Form, um Beeindruckendes zu schaffen. Mit über zwei Minuten ist die Vertonung des Goethe-Gedichts ‘Edel sei der Mensch…’ die längste Komposition auf dieser CD. Beethoven verstand sich perfekt im knappen Chorsatz, und die beiden Ensembles Tamanial und Cantus Novus Wien betreiben beste Imagepflege für den Komponisten.

Mit ihren klaren, frischen, humorvollen, zum Schmunzeln verführenden Darbietungen zeichnen sie das lächelnde, ironische und lustige Gegenbild zum oft als missmutig und grantig dargestellten Beethoven.

It’s almost unbelievable that a busy composer like Beethoven could find the time to write such artful, entertaining miniatures, some of which we are now hearing in first recordings?
Obviously, he did not always need the great form to create impressive works. At over two minutes, the setting of Goethe’s poem ‘Edel sei der Mensch…’ is the longest composition on this CD. Beethoven got along perfectly in the short choral movements, and the two ensembles Tamanial and Cantus Novus Wien are doing their best to promote the composer’s image.
With their clear, fresh, humorous and smiling performances, they draw a smiling, ironic and funny counterpart to the disgruntled and grumpy Beethoven, like he is presented sometimes.
