Leonard Slatkin dirigiert ein bekanntes und ein weniger bekanntes Werk des amerikanischen Komponisten Aaron Copland. Das Ballett Grogh ist Coplands erstes Orchesterwerk. Es entstand 1925 unter dem Einfluss Stravinskys (was die Musik anbelangt) und des Films Nosferatu (was den Inhalt angeht). In dem Ballett erweckt ein Hexenmeister (Grogh) Leichen zum Leben und lässt sie zu seinem Vergnügen tanzen. Slatkin gelingt es, die musikalischen Charakterisierungen treffend darzustellen. Die einzelnen Tänze werden sehr suggestiv gespielt.

In dem 13 Jahre später komponierten Ballett Billy the Kid, das auf dieser CD ganz gespielt wird, bemüht sich Slatkin, das Farbenspiel der Musik ganz besonders hervorzustreichen, ohne die Rhythmik zu vernachlässigen. Er spornt das Detroit Symphony zu einem spannenden und technisch sehr guten Musizieren an.

The ballet Grogh is Copland’s first orchestral work. It was written in 1925 under the influence of Stravinsky (in terms of music) and the film Nosferatu (in terms of content). In the ballet, a warlock (Grogh) brings corpses to life and makes them dance for his pleasure. Slatkin succeeds in appropriately portraying the musical characterizations. The individual dances are played very suggestively.
In the ballet Billy the Kid, composed 13 years later and played in its entirety on this CD, Slatkin emphasizes the music’s colors without neglecting the rhythms. He spurs the Detroit Symphony to one exciting and technically very good music-making.
