Camille Saint-Saëns komponierte seine Symphonie F-Dur mit dem Beinamen ‘Urbs Roma’ (Stadt Rom) 1857, im Alter von 22 Jahren. Er gewann damit nicht, wie erhofft, den ‘Prix de Rome’, aber immerhin den ersten Preis eines Kompositionswettbewerbs der ‘Société Sainte-Cécile’. Das in traditioneller Form konzipierte Werk wird von Jean-Jacques Kantorow schwungvoll und federnd dirigiert. Der Orchesterklang ist leicht und transparent.
Die Orgelsymphonie geht Kantorow sehr mysteriös und verhalten an. So baut er eine gute Spannung auf, die sich im zweiten Satz alert entladen kann. Der Orgelsatz wird im Surround-Klang ungemein wirkungsvoll, wobei die Tontechniker eine exzellente Balance erzielt haben, die den Orchesterklang und die Orgel schlank und durchhörbar werden lässt.
Camille Saint-Saëns composed his Symphony in F major with the epithet Urbs Roma (City of Rome) in 1857, at the age of 22. He did not, as hoped, win the Prix de Rome with it, but at least the first prize of a composition competition of the Société Sainte-Cécile. The work, conceived in traditional form, is conducted by Jean-Jacques Kantorow with verve and élan. The orchestral sound is light and transparent.
The first movement of the Organ symphony is very mysterious and restrained. Thus Kantorow builds up a good tension that can be discharged alertly in the second movement. The organ movement becomes greatly effective in the surround recording, with the sound engineers achieving an excellent balance that makes the orchestral sound and the organ lean and clear.
