Für dieses Album haben Gimeno und das Toronto Symphony neben einem neuen Stück von Kelly-Marie Murphy zwei Ballettmusiken aus Stravinskys neoklassischer Periode ausgewählt.
Le Baiser de la Fée, Der Kuss der Fee (1928), basiert auf dem Märchen ‘Das Eismädchen’ von Hans Christian Anderson. Die mit Musik von frühen Klavierstücken Tchaikovskys komponierte einaktige Ballettpartitur wurde in eine kürzere Version mit dem Namen Divertimento umgewandelt. Unter Gimenos umsichtiger Leitung spielt das TSO dieses Stück absolut formvollendet.
Kelly-Marie Murphys Werk Curiosity, Genius, and the Search For Petula Clark ist ein mit vielen Motiven recht beliebiges, aber effektvolles Stück.
Serge Diaghilev bestellte Stravinskys Pulcinella 1919 für seine Balletttruppe.
Der Komponist verwendete dafür Musik von Pergolesi. Im Gegensatz zur Suite aus diesem Ballett, ist eine Aufführung der gesamten Ballettpartitur eine Seltenheit, insbesondere, weil sie Vokalsätze für drei Sänger enthält. Die Solisten dieser Aufnahme singen vorzüglich und werten die Musik deutlich auf.
Gustavo Gimeno gibt der Musik rhythmischem Schwung, eine schillernde Farbpalette und ein großes Raffinement.
For this album, Gimeno and the Toronto Symphony have selected two pieces of ballet music from Stravinsky’s neoclassical period, as well as a new piece by Kelly-Marie Murphy.
Le Baiser de la Fée, The Fairy’s Kiss (1928) is based on the fairy tale ‘The Ice Maiden’ by Hans Christian Anderson. The one-act ballet score, using early piano pieces by Tchaikovsky, was transformed into a shorter version called Divertimento. Under Gimeno’s careful direction, the TSO performs this piece to absolute perfection.
Kelly-Marie Murphy’s work Curiosity, Genius, and the Search for Petula Clark is nothing extraordinary, but, in the end, an effective piece with many motifs.
Serge Diaghilev commissioned Stravinsky’s Pulcinella for his ballet company in 1919. The composer used music by Pergolesi. Unlike the suite from this ballet, a performance of the entire ballet score is a rarity, especially since it contains vocal movements for three singers. The soloists on this recording sing beautifully and enhance the music considerably.
Gustavo Gimeno brings rhythmic drive, a dazzling palette of colors, and great refinement to the music.
