Die 1947 geborene und in den USA lebende Waliserin Hilary Tann schuf mit ‘And the snow did lie’ Musik zu Illustrationen des Kanadiers André Bergeron für Germaine Guèvremonts Roman Le Survenant.
Die 10 Lithographien sind auf drei Sätze aufgeteilt, die jeweils eine Jahreszeit in der trostlosen Landschaft des Nordens darstellen. Der erste Satz evoziert die Einöde des Spätherbstes mit einem murmelnden Dröhnen, das von der schrillen Stimme des Verfalls durchdrungen wird. Der zweite Satz stellt den sanften Schneefall des Winters dar. Das Werk endet mit einem dritten Satz, der die Fluten des Frühlings heraufbeschwört.
Diese ‘Drei Jahreszeiten’ sind musikalisch ungemein evokativ, und allein schon ohne die Lithographien zu sehen (die im Booklet enthalten sind) kann sich der Hörer seine eigenen Bilder im Kopf malen. Diese Freiheit lässt ihm die Musik, und das so gut funktioniert, verdankt er dem intensiven und technisch brillanten Spiel des Sirius Quartet.
Born in 1947 in Wales and living in the USA, Hilary Tann created with ‘And the snow did lie’ music for illustrations which the Canadian artist André Bergeron produced for Germaine Guèvremont’s novel Le Survenant.
The 10 lithographs are divided into three movements, each representing a season in the bleak northern landscape. The first movement evokes the wasteland of late autumn with a murmuring drone pierced by the shrill voice of decay. The second movement imagines the gentle snowfall of winter. Finally, the work concludes with a third movement that describes the floods of springtime with shivering tremolos, lyrical lines, and echoes of the previous textures.
These ‘Three Seasons’ are musically very evocative, and without even seeing the lithographs (which are included in the booklet) the listener can paint his own pictures in his head. The Sirius Quartet’s playing is intense and technically brilliant.
