André Caplet, Dirigent und Orchestrator, der unter anderem mehrere Werke von Claude Debussy orchestrierte, ist als Komponist nicht sehr bekannt. Dennoch hat er zahlreiche Werke hinterlassen, obschon er bereits im Alter von 46 Jahren verschied.
Diese CD beinhaltet sechs sehr verschiedene Werke. Das Programm beginnt mit der lebendig-farbigen, fein deskriptiven Suite Persane für zehn Blasinstrumente.
Mit La chanson la plus charmante hat Caplet ein Gedicht von Victor Hugo vertont. Légende ist eine knapp viertelstündige Tondichtung für Saxophon, von deren drei Fassungen hier jene für Kammerorchester und Saxophon eingespielt wurde. Es ist ein melancholisches Werk mit impressionistischen Stimmungen, das an Debussy erinnert, ohne dessen kompositorisches Raffinement zu erreichen.
Les Prières für Stimme, Harfe und Streichquartett ist ein besonders ergreifendes, mystizistisches Werk, das im Kontext des Ersten Weltkriegs entstanden ist, in dem Caplet großes Leid erfuhr, als er in einen Giftgasangriff geriet und gesundheitlich so geschwächt wurde, dass er den Beruf des Dirigenten aufgeben musste.
Die drei Fabeln von La Fontaine bilden ein unvollendetes Werk, das Takénori Némoto fertiggestellt hat und das in seiner Orchesterbegleitung dem kecken Inhalt der Texte absolut gerecht wird. Der Bariton Laurent Deleuil ist in diesen Stücken der exzellent gestaltende Sänger. Am Schluss des Programms steht das originelle Werk Conte fantastique für Harfe und Streichquartett. Die impressionistisch-fantastische Komposition ist eine musikalische Nacherzählung der Novelle The Mask of the Red Death (Die Maske des roten Todes) von Edgar Allan Poe, in der Prinz Prospero dem Seuchentod zu entrinnen versucht, indem sie sich mit seinen Freunden auf eine entlegene Burg zurückzieht. Vergebens, denn der Rote Tod erwischt die Geflüchteten auch dort.
Caplets gespenstisch schauriges Werk wird vom Ensemble Musica Nigella mit eindringlicher Schärfe spannungsvoll interpretiert.

With La chanson la plus charmante, Caplet has set a poem by Victor Hugo to music. Légende is a tone poem for saxophone lasting almost a quarter of an hour, of whose three versions the one for chamber orchestra and saxophone has been recorded here. It is a melancholy work with impressionistic moods, reminiscent of Debussy without reaching his compositional sophistication.
Les Prières for voice, harp, and string quartet is a particularly poignant, mystical work written in the context of World War I, during which Caplet experienced great suffering when he was caught in a poison gas attack and became so weakened in health that he had to give up the profession of conductor.
La Fontaine’s three fables form an unfinished work completed by Takénori Némoto, whose orchestral accompaniment does absolute justice to the perky content of the texts. The baritone Laurent Deleuil is the excellent singer in these pieces. The program concludes with the original work Conte fantastique for harp and string quartet. This impressionistic-fantastic composition is a musical retelling of the novella The Mask of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe, in which Prince Prospero tries to escape plague death by retreating with his friends to a remote castle. In vain, for the Red Death catches the fugitives there as well.
Caplet’s hauntingly eerie work is performed by the Ensemble Musica Nigella with one gripping poignancy.
