The French city Pantin, north-east of Paris, has inaugurated a big building comprising, in the same walls, a swimming pool and a music conservatory. The politicians hope that it will create bridges between sports and culture. « Cultural spaces have been closed for too long, like temples, which can frighten a popular audience: 40% of the territory’s population lives in priority neighborhoods, compared to only 15 to 20% of the audience of our conservatories. The fact that it is connected to a swimming pool, which is a popular place by nature, makes access to it less frightening », explains Alexie Lorca, vice-president in charge of culture.
The conservatory will be able to accommodate up to 1,800 students for music classes, but also theater. A 250-seat auditorium will also be available for concerts and performances.
