Benjamin Britten komponierte seine drei Cello-Suiten zwischen 1964 und 1971 für seinen Freund Mstislav Rostropovich. Jedes dieser drei Stücke hat eine eigene Struktur und einen äußerst abwechslungsreichen Inhalt, wodurch jede Monotonie vermieden wird.

Jakob Spahn, Solocellist der Bayerischen Staatsoper und Professor an der Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg, hat sich bemüht, die Nuancen der Sätze jedes Stückes getreu wiederzugeben, und das Ergebnis ist höchst zufriedenstellend.

Die Stilübung der ersten Suite wird mit perfekter Beherrschung und Akribie ausgeführt; in ähnlicher Weise erlaubt die kontrastreiche Zweite Suite Spahn, seine spielerischen und gestalterischen Qualitäten sehr inspiriert zu demonstrieren. Schließlich entfaltet er mit Überzeugung und Gefühl die dramatische und leidenschaftliche Spannung der letzten Suite.

Jakob Spahn, the principal cellist of the Bavarian State Opera and professor at the Nuremberg Academy of Music, has endeavored to faithfully reproduce the nuances of the movements of each piece, and the result is most satisfying.
The stylistic exercise of the First Suite is executed with perfect mastery and meticulousness; similarly, the contrasting Second Suite allows Spahn to demonstrate his playing and shaping qualities in a very inspired manner. Finally, he unfolds with conviction and feeling the dramatic and passionate tension of the last Suite.
