Finnish violinist and conductor Jaakko Kuusisto, 46, has announced on social media that he is awaiting surgery for a brain tumor. He says, that doctors assume that the tumor is malignant but in a place where a successful surgery is possible.
Kuusisto, whose younger brother is the violinist Pekka Kuusisto, was concertmaster of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra from 1998 until 2012. He is currently artistic director of the Oulu Music festival and chief conductor of the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra.
When BIS Records launched a project of complete Sibelius recordings, Kuusisto had a major role in the violin works and string chamber music.
