Es gibt Aufnahmeprojekte, deren Sinn man nicht versteht. Das WDR-Orchester hat 2019 erst unter der Leitung von Jukka-Pekka Saraste eine sehr gute Gesamtaufnahme der Beethoven-Symphonien bei Profil auf den Markt gebracht. Jetzt, anderthalb Jahre später, spielt dasselbe Orchester bei Pentatone unter Marek Janowski. Die Frage ist, ob sich der Aufwand lohnt und ob die neue Gesamtaufnahme dem Markt und vor allem Beethoven etwas bringt.

In den beiden ersten, recht kräftig durchformulierten Symphonien kann ich nichts hören, was mich begeistern würde. In der Dritten passiert im zweiten Satz etliches, was interessant ist, auch wenn es mir letztlich nicht unbedingt gefällt, weil es doch durch stampfende Rhythmen viel Schwere in den generell recht emotional angelegten Satz bringt. Der Rest der Symphonie erklingt in einer routinierten, gefälligen Interpretation.

In der Vierten gefallen vor allem der schön und gefühlvoll musizierte langsame und die schwungvollen beiden letzte Sätze.

Recht energisch und rhetorisch geht Janowski die Fünfte an. Der dritte Satz ist allerdings recht schwerfällig, während die Musik im Finale wieder an Energie gewinnt. Insgesamt aber gibt es hier nichts Neues und Bemerkenswertes.

Auch die zweifelsfrei gut musizierte Sechste, die Pastorale, bleibt im Grunde Routine. Es gibt nichts darin, was mich übermäßig begeistern würde.

Dasselbe gilt für weite Teil der Siebten Symphonie mit Ausnahme des zweiten Satzes, der durch eine besonders aparte Gewichtung der Melodielinien sehr attraktiv wird.

Inspiriert zeigt sich Janowski in der Achten Symphonie, die kraftvoll energisch und farbig gespielt wird. Auch die Aufführung der Neunten ist an sich beachtlich, aber nicht herausragend.

Somit kann ich die anfangs gestellte Frage beantworten: der Janowski-Beethoven-Zyklus ist gut, aber reiht sich letztlich nur als einer unter vielen in die lange Aufnahmeserie der Symphonien ein. Und ja, am Ende gefällt mir Jukka-Pekka Sarastes Zyklus sogar besser, er ist spannender, rhetorischer und dynamischer.

Und er hat den besseren Sound (trotz eines partiell zumindest identischen Aufnahmeteams).

There are recording projects whose necessity is at least questionable. In 2019, the WDR Orchestra and Jukka-Pekka Saraste, released a very good complete recording of the Beethoven symphonies on Profil. Now, a year and a half later, the same orchestra plays with Pentatone under Marek Janowski. The question is whether it is worth the effort and whether the new complete recording will bring something to the market and especially to Beethoven.
In the first two symphonies, which are quite powerfully played, I cannot hear anything exciting. In the third, the second movement contains a number of things that are interesting, even if I don’t necessarily like it, because through stomping rhythms it brings a lot of heaviness to the generally quite emotional movement. The rest of the symphony is pleasing, yet uneventful.
In the Fourth, I especially like the beautifully and sensitively played slow movement and the energetic last two movements.
Janowski’s approach of the Fifth is quite energetic and rhetorical. The third movement, however, is rather ponderous, while the music regains energy in the finale. All in all, however, there is nothing new and remarkable here.
Even the Sixth, the Pastorale, which is undoubtedly well played, remains basically routine. There is nothing excessively exciting in it.
The same applies to large parts of the Seventh Symphony, with the exception of the second movement, which is made very attractive by particularly distinctive melody lines.
Janowski finds inspiration in the Eighth Symphony, which is played with powerful energy and colour. The performance of the Ninth Symphony is also very good, but not outstanding.
So I can answer the question asked at the beginning: Janowski’s Beethoven cycle is good, but it is only one among many in the long series of recordings of the symphonies. And yes, in the end I even like Jukka-Pekka Saraste’s cycle better, it is more exciting, more rhetorical and more dynamic. And it has the better sound (despite a partially at least identical recording team).
