The Besançon International Competition for Young Conductors has selected 20 candidates from 15 nationalities for the finals taking place in September 2015. Among them are 4 women and 16 men, the average age being approximately 29 years. Japan is leading the list with 5 candidates. France and the United States have both two candidates.
Created in 1951 the competition has a repertoire which spans classical, romantic, 20th century music, contemporary music, oratorio and opera. The jury of the 54th edition is chaired by Dennis Russel Davies, with members Guillaume Connesson, composer, and conductors Jean-François Verdier, Steven Sloane, Jorge Rotter, Dante Anzolini, Catherine Simonpietri, and orchestra manager Fabienne Voisin.
