American conductor John Axelrod, 56, has signed a contract as Principal Conductor of the Bucharest Symphony Orchestra. The contract is open ended, without term limits. Axelrod succeeds Jin Wang who was in the position since 2017. The Bucharest Symphony Orchestra is a private Romanian orchestra founded in 2007 by the Philson Young Association.
John Axelrod is also Principal Guest Conductor of the City of Kyoto Symphony Orchestra. Previous positions include Artistic and Musical Director of the Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla (2014-2020), Principal Guest Conductor of Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano (LaVerdi), from the 2001-2017, Music Director of the NHK Jazz at the Metropolitan Theater from 2015-2017, Music Director of the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire in France from 2009-2013, Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra from 2004-2009 and Principal Conductor of Sinfonietta Cracovia (2001-2009).
