Singaporean conductor Kahchun Wong, 35, has been appointed chief conductor of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. He has been already principal conductor of the orchestra, a position he still holds. Wong will begin his five-year appointment as chief conductor in September 2023.
He rose to international acclaim after winning the first prize at the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition in 2016. Wong became chief conductor of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, his first full-time orchestral conducting post, in September 2018. In October 2021, the orchestra announced that Wong is scheduled to stand down from this post in August 2022.
