Zum 15-jährigen Bestehen ihres D&B Duos haben die kroatischen Pianisten Dubravka Vukalovic and Bruno Vlahek ein Album mit drei kleinen Stücken des kroatischen Komponisten Alfi Kabiljo, de Fallas Spanischem Tanz, dem titelgebenden Scaramouche von Darius Milhaud sowie den Tänzen aus West Side Story von Leonard Bernstein aufgenommen. Die Interpretationen zeugen von feiner Musikalität und vermeiden jede Show. Das gibt dem Programm einen Touch von gutmütigem Charme. – For the 15th anniversary of their D&B Duo, Croatian pianists Dubravka Vukalovic and Bruno Vlahek have released an album featuring three short pieces by Croatian composer Alfi Kabiljo, de Falla’s Spanish Dance, Scaramouche by Darius Milhaud, and the dances from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein. Mussorgskys Eine Nacht auf dem Kahlen Berge sowie Bilder einer Ausstellung, Balakirevs Islamey und Borodins Polowetzer Tänze haben das Singapore Symphony und Dirigent Lan Shui unter dem Titel Spectacular Russia zusammengefasst. Dem nicht gerade einfallsreichen Titel entsprechen uninspirierte Interpretationen in fettem, kompakten glanzlosen Klang. – Mussorgsky’s A Night on the Bare Mountain as well as Pictures at an Exhibition, Balakirev’s Islamey and Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances have been combined by the Singapore Symphony and conductor Lan Shui under the title Spectacular Russia. The not really original title is matched by uninspired interpretations in fat, compact lackluster sound. (BIS 2412) – ♪♪

Music for Self-Isolation nennt sich eine CD des kanadischen Labels Centrediscs, auf der 31 kurze Solo- und Duowerke für eine Vielzahl von Instrumenten und Stimme des kanadischen Komponisten Frank Horvat zu hören sind. Er komponierte diese Stücke während des Lockdowns innerhalb von sechs Wochen, und sie wurden von einer Vielzahl von Musikern in aller Welt gespielt. Die Aufnahme, die am 9. April erscheint, enthält alle diese Werke, gespielt von einigen der führenden kanadischen Solisten und Orchestermusikern. Es sind nette kleine Stücke, keine Geniestreiche, und die CD ist bemerkenswert lediglich als Zeitdokument und musikalisches Überbleibsel der Pandemie. – Music for Self-Isolation is the name of a CD from the Canadian label Centrediscs that features 31 short solo and duo works for a variety of instruments and voice by Canadian composer Frank Horvat. He composed these pieces over a six-week period during the lockdown, and they have been performed by a variety of musicians around the world. The recording, released April 9, features all of these works played by some of Canada’s leading soloists and orchestral musicians. Ein neues Album des National Forum of Music aus Wroclaw mit dem von Jaroslaw Thiel geleiteten Wrocław Baroque Orchestra enthält die Ersteinspielung der Elegie in c-Moll von Karol Kurpinski, die erste Aufnahme auf historischen Instrumenten von Ignacy Feliks Dobrzynskis Symphonie Nr. 2 in c-Moll (Charakteristische) und Stanislaw Moniuszkos Märchenouvertüre. Es ist ein gefälliges Programm mit viel schöner und netter Musik, liebevoll gespielt. – A new album by the National Forum of Music from Wroclaw with the Wrocław Baroque Orchestra conducted by Jaroslaw Thiel includes the premiere recording of Elegy in C minor by Karol Kurpinski, the first recording on period instruments of Ignacy Feliks Dobrzynski’s Symphony No. 2 in C minor (Characteristic) and Stanislaw Moniuszko’s Fairy Tale Overture. Halasz in Spanien
Der deutsche Gitarrist Franz Halasz hat bei BIS ein äußerst stimmungsvolles Album mit spanischer Gitarrenmusik veröffentlicht., darunter weniger und besser bekannte Werke von Maza, Milan, Granados, Sor, Falla, Torroba, Tarrega, Albeniz und Turina. Das ist ein abwechslungsreiches Programm und gibt Halasz die Gelegenheit, vielfältige Stilmittel einzusetzen, wobei sein Sinn für dramatische Abläufe besonders hervorgestrichen werden muss. Spielfreude, Liebe zum Instrument und zur Musik sind weitere wesentliche Interpretationskomponenten, die diese SACD wertvoll und attraktiv werden lassen. – German guitarist Franz Halasz has released on BIS a highly atmospheric album of Spanish guitar music, including lesser and better known works by Maza, Milan, Granados, Sor, Falla, Torroba, Tarrega, Albeniz and Turina. This varied program gives Halasz the opportunity to use a multiplicity of stylistic elements, and his sense of dramatic progression is particularly impressing. Zeitvertreib bis zur nächsten CD
Die CD Echoes mit dem Signum Quartett bietet Saxophon-Bearbeitungen von Werken so unterschiedlicher Komponisten wie u.a. Dowland, Glass, Fauré, Hindemith, Vasks und Albinoni. Die Auswahl scheint mir ein wenig beliebig, was aber nicht heißt, dass die Musik nicht gut gespielt wird und auch gefällig ist. Aber vom Signum Quartet kommt im Mai noch etwas viel Spannenderes, konzeptuell besser gestrickt und hinreißend musiziert. Wer sich in Erwartung dieser CD, die bei Berlin Classics erscheinen will, mit diesem Digest bei DG die Zeit verkürzen will, wird gewiss nicht schlecht bedient. – The CD Echoes with the Signum Quartet offers saxophone arrangements of works by composers as diverse as Dowland, Glass, Fauré, Hindemith, Vasks and Albinoni, among others. The selection seems a bit arbitrary to me, but that doesn’t mean the music isn’t well played and pleasing. But from the Signum Quartet comes something much more exciting in May, conceptually better, and ravishingly played.
