Glass-Oper über Gandhi
Orange Mountain Music hat das Album mit der Oper Satyagraha von Philip Glass veröffentlicht. Sie beruht auf dem Leben und Wirken von Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) und spielt während seines Kampfs für die Gleichberechtigung der Inder in Südafrika, bevor er 1915 in seine Heimat zurückkehrte. Für Glass ist das Stück « mehr Ritual als Unterhaltung, mehr Mysterienspiel als Oper ». Diese CD-Einspielung enthält den Mitschnitt einer Aufführung an der New Yorker Metropolitan Opera von 2011. Im Gegensatz zu der Oper Akhnaten ist hier das Vokale wichtiger und wird von den Solisten Richard Croft, Bradley Garvin, Richard Bernstein und Rachelle Durkin gut bedient. Das Metropolitan Opera Orchestra spielt stimmungsvoll unter Donald Palumbo. – Orange Mountain Music has released the album featuring the opera Satyagraha by Philip Glass. Based on the life and work of Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), it is set during his struggle for Indian equality in South Africa before he returned home in 1915. For Glass, the piece is « more ritual than entertainment, more mystery play than opera. » This CD recording includes a recording of a 2011 performance at New York’s Metropolitan Opera. Unlike the opera Akhnaten, the singing is more important here and is well served by soloists Richard Croft, Bradley Garvin, Richard Bernstein and Rachelle Durkin. Miniaturen von Philippe Gaubert
Der Franzose Philippe Gaubert war Flötist an der Pariser Oper, ehe er 1919 Professor am Pariser Konservatorium, Chefdirigent am Opernhaus und der Société des Concerts du Conservatoire wurde. Er war damit eine der einflussreichsten Figuren im französischen Musikleben, das er zudem mit einer Reihe von äußerst charmanten Kompositionen bereicherte. Einige davon sind auf dieser Calliope-CD zu hören: eine graziöse Musik die an jene von Ravel und Debussy erinnert! Es sind seltene und zum Teil unveröffentlichte Werke. Die Sopranistin Marie-Louise Duthoit, der Trompeter Eric Aubier, der Flötist François Bru, die Pianisten Pascal Gallet, Laurence Disse, Ariane Gendrat und Catherine Legrand spielen die Ballade und das Poème élégiaque für Bratsche und Klavier, ein Cantabile et scherzetto pour cornet à pistons et piano, Fantaisie fugue pour flûte et piano, einige kurze Stücke für Flöte und Klavier, Klavier-Solostücke und einige Lieder. Es ist ein gemischtes und durchaus interessantes Programm auf solidem Niveau. – Frenchman Philippe Gaubert was a flautist at the Paris Opera before becoming a professor at the Paris Conservatoire in 1919, chief conductor at the Opera House and the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire. He was thus one of the most influential figures in French musical life, which he also enriched with a series of extremely charming compositions. Some of them can be heard on this Caliope CD: graceful music reminiscent of that of Ravel and Debussy! These are rare and partly unpublished works. Soprano Marie-Louise Duthoit, trumpeter Eric Aubier, flutist François Bru, pianists Pascal Gallet, Laurence Disse, Ariane Gendrat and Catherine Legrand play the Ballade and Poème élégiaque for viola and piano, a Cantabile et scherzetto pour cornet à pistons et piano, Fantaisie fugue pour flûte et piano, some short pieces for flute and piano, piano solo pieces and some songs. Der junge französische Klarinettist Joë Christophe Preisträger des ARD-Musikwettbewerbs, und der Pianist Vincent Mussat spielen die Sonatina für Klarinette & Klavier von Horovitz, Gauberts Fantaisie für Klarinette & Klavier, von Debussy die Petite Piece und die Erste Rhapsodie Nr. 1 für Klarinette & Klavier, Poulencs Sonate für Klarinette & Klavier sowie kleinere Stücke von Bozza, Simpson und Clarke. Mit seinem weichen, sanften Klarinettenton kann Christophe die langsamen und ruhigen Stücke wunderbar einfühlsam und bewegend gestalten; in den virtuosen Musik bleibt sein Klarinettenton ebenfalls schön, rund und warm. Das sind herausragende Interpretationen. – The young French clarinetist Joë Christophe, winner of the ARD Music Competition, and the pianist Vincent Mussat play Sonatina for Clarinet & Piano by Horovitz, Gaubert’s Fantaisie for Clarinet & Piano, Debussy’s Petite Piece; and Poulenc’s First Rhapsody No. 1 for Clarinet & Piano, as well as smaller pieces by Bozza, Simpson and Clarke. With his soft, gentle clarinet tone, Christophe is able to make the slow and quiet pieces wonderfully sensitive and moving; in the virtuoso music, his clarinet tone also remains beautiful, round and warm. Japanisch-französische Haikus
Renaud Gagneux (1947-2018) hat sein Werk mit 40 Haïku abgeschlossen. Die Stücke werden von der Pianistin Nozomi Misawa und der Cembalistin Laure Morabito gespielt. Die Gedichte werden in Japanisch von Hiromi Asai und Akihiro Nishida, vorgetragen (im Booklet sind sie auf Französisch und Englisch abgedruckt). Die einfachen Gedichte und die karge Musik ergänzen sich zu einem stimmungsreichen, deskriptiven Ganzen. – Renaud Gagneux (1947-2018) has completed his oeuvre with 40 haïku. The pieces are performed by pianist Nozomi Misawa, and harpsichordist Laure Morabito. The poems are recited in Japanese by Hiromi Asai and Akihiro Nishida (they are printed in French and English in the booklet). Die kanadische Pianistin Angela Hewitt spielt romantische Transkriptionen von Liedern von Schumann, Schubert, Strauss, Grieg, Gershwin, Grainger und de Falla sowie Hewitts eigene Transkription von Mahlers Adagietto aus seiner Symphonie Nr. 5. Das ist eine schöne Kollektion in wunderbar einfühlsamen und betont schönen, sehr inspirierten und inspirierenden Interpretationen. – Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt performs romantic transcriptions of songs by Schumann, Schubert, Strauss, Grieg, Gershwin, Grainger, and de Falla, as well as Hewitt’s own transcription of Mahler’s Adagietto from his Symphony No. 5.
