The L.A. Music Center, a huge organization running different venues such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and the Music Center Plaza with resident companies LA Opera, LA Phil and LA Master Chorale has made the L.A. County’s auditor-controller an unhappy man. According to a report ordered by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors after financial difficulties at the Music Center, the controller was apparently not able to examine more than 50% of the center’s financial records since he was refused the access to these data. Yet, the audit showed that some county money was not used according to contracts and that a number of expenditures “appear questionable.”
Music Center responsible said that they welcome many of the recommendations, but due to factors “unique to our industry” a special flexibility is needed. Could it be that the County has delegated auditors who are not fully aware of how the music business works?
