On April 8, the board of Milan’s opera house La Scala will discuss about the new leadership of La Scala, when Dominique Meyer’s contract as Superintendent expires next February. Now they have to face a request from the orchestra musicians.
There is an appeal of La Scala’s orchestra to Mayor Giuseppe Sala, who is president of the theater, and to the board of directors to extend for two seasons the contract of current director Dominique Meyer.
This is not a rejection of the arrival of Fortunato Ortombina, the director of the La Fenice in Venice, whom Sala and the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, have agreed upon, who has always stated that he wanted an Italian at the head of La Scala after three foreign directors. But rather than an extension, this should concern both Meyer and music director Riccardo Chailly, whose contract expires in 2025 but has been extended for two years, until 2027.
The letter to the board was supported by more than 95 percent of the musicians.
