Mahlers 3. Symphonie, mit ihren Naturlauten, ihrer Begegnung mit den Tieren, dem Menschen und mit der Liebe startet mit Bychkov in einer kräftigen, pathetischen und letztlich sehr langweiligen Art. Zunächst scheint das den Abwärtstrend zu bestätigen, auf dem sich der Dirigent in seinem Mahler-Zyklus befindet. Doch dann gelingt ihm der zweite Satz recht gut und stimmungsvoll. Sehr charmant! Im dritten schleicht sich wieder mehr Beliebigkeit ein. Der vierte Satz ist wirklich sehr langsam, vielleicht etwas mehr als gefordert, eher träge als Misterioso. Das Kecke kommt dann im folgenden Satz nicht wirklich zum Ausdruck.
Im Finale wird das ‘Ruhevoll’ so ausgelegt, dass die Musik langweilig dahinfließt, ereignislos. Der erste Eindruck hat also nicht getäuscht. Bychkovs Mahler-Zyklus, der so gut begonnen hatte, hält nicht, was er versprochen hatte.
Mahler’s Third Symphony, with its sounds of nature, its encounters with animals, people and love, begins with Bychkov in a powerful, pathetic and ultimately very boring way. At first, this seems to confirm the downward trend in the conductor’s Mahler cycle. But then he manages the second movement quite well and atmospherically. Very charming! In the third movement, more arbitrariness creeps in. The fourth movement is really very slow, perhaps a bit more than necessary, and more sluggish than Misterioso. The boldness is not really expressed in the following movement.
In the finale, the ‘Ruhevoll’ is interpreted in such a way that the music flows boringly, uneventfully. So the first impression was not misleading. Bychkov’s Mahler cycle, which had begun so well, does not live up to its promise.
