Stephen Hough beginnt diese Schubert-CD mit der enigmatischen Sonate D. 894, die den Beinamen ‘Fantasie’ trägt. Und gerade diesen Charakter einer ‘Fantasie’ scheint der Pianist vor allem im Auge zu haben. Er spielt vital, betont rhythmisch, mit feingliedriger Phrasierung, die zwar auch das Melancholische, aber vor allem das Frohe sowie das Freudig-Erregte zum Ausdruck bringt.
Auch in der Sonate D. 664 kommt in einem Klavierspiel von ganz besonderer Klarheit auch eher Positives und lebensbejahendes äußert. Im Andante sind freilich auch etwas melancholischere Wendungen zu hören.
Stephen Hough begins this Schubert CD with the enigmatic Sonata D. 894, which bears the epithet ‘Fantasy’. And it is precisely this character of a ‘fantasy’ that the pianist seems to have in mind above all. He plays vital, emphatically rhythmic, with delicate phrasing, surely expressing the melancholy, but above all the joyful as well as the joyfully excited.
In the Sonata D. 664, too, rather positive and life-affirming things are expressed in a piano playing of a very special clarity. In the Andante, admittedly, somewhat more melancholy turns can also be heard.
