Zunächst ein bisschen Geographie: Die Stadt Siegen liegt im Bundesland Nordrheinwestfalen, ist Zentrum der Region Südwestfalen, Geburtsstadt des Malers Peter Paul Rubens und Heimstadt der Philharmonie Südwestfalen. Im Juni 2023 ist das Orchester in das neue Haus der Musik umgezogen und dokumentiert dies nun im Album ‘Die Weihe des Hauses’. In der gleichnamigen Beethoven-Ouvertüre verspürt man den neuen Schwung, den das Orchester in nun angemessenen Räumen erlebt. Nabil Shehata spornt sein Ensemble zu kraftvollem, energetischem Musizieren mit feierlichem Impetus an: eine sehr griffige, pulsierende und differenzierte Beethoven-Lektüre.
Kernstück dieser Aufnahme ist P.I. Tschaikowskys 5. Symphonie – oft in Analogie zu Beethovens Fünfter ebenfalls als Schicksalssymphonie beschrieben.
Nabil Shehata, seit 2019 Chefdirigent der Philharmonie Südwestfalen, geht diese Symphonie mit einer packenden Rhythmik an, die gleichermaßen Leidenschaft wie die stets unterschwellig mitschwingende Melancholie unterstreicht. Vor allem aber erleben wir wunderbar detailreich den Melodiker Tchaikovsky, etwa im Andante mit einer verzaubernden Horn-Kantilene sowie einer genüsslich musikantischen Walzerepisode.
Zum Abschluss gibt es noch ein Auftragswerk zur Weihe des neuen Konzerthauses in Siegen: Andres Reukaufs Südwestfalen-Fanfare, ein gelungenes, feierliches Genre-Stück, das sich als Konzertouvertüre etablieren könnte.
First a bit of geography: The city of Siegen is located in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, is the center of the region of South Westphalia, the birthplace of the painter Peter Paul Rubens and the home of the Philharmonic Orchestra of South Westphalia. In June 2023, the orchestra moved to the new Haus der Musik and now documents this in the album ‘The Consecration of the House’. In the Beethoven overture of the same name, one senses the new momentum the orchestra is experiencing in now appropriate spaces. Nabil Shehata spurs his ensemble on to powerful, energetic music-making with celebratory impetus: a very gripping, pulsating and differentiated Beethoven reading.
The centerpiece of this recording is P.I. Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony – often described, by analogy with Beethoven’s Fifth, as a symphony of destiny as well.
Nabil Shehata, principal conductor of the Philharmonie Südwestfalen since 2019, approaches this symphony with a gripping rhythm that underscores both passion and the melancholy that always resonates subliminally. Above all, however, we experience Tchaikovsky the melodist in wonderful detail, for example in the Andante with an enchanting horn cantilena as well as a delightfully musical waltz episode.
Finally, there is a commissioned work for the dedication of the new concert hall in Siegen: Andres Reukauf’s Südwestfalen-Fanfare, a successful, solemn genre piece that could establish itself as a concert overture.
