Als Songs of Wandering, Love, & Protest  wurde die Komposition This Land Sings des amerikanischen Komponisten Michael Daugherty bezeichnet. Er hat 11 Originallieder auf meist eigene Texte und sechs Instrumentalstücke geschaffen, die eine Hommage an den Liedermacher und politischen Aktivisten Woody Guthrie darstellen, der « während der Großen Depression und des Zweiten Weltkriegs mit Gitarre und Mundharmonika durch Amerika reiste, um Lieder der Hoffnung und sozialen Gerechtigkeit vorzutragen », wie Daugherty sagt. Die im Stile einer Radioshow zusammengestellten Stücke gehen meist auf die Volksmelodien zurück, die Guthrie in seinen eigenen Liedern verarbeitete.

This Land Sings ist für Sopran, Bariton und ein Ensemble von sieben Instrumenten geschrieben, zuzüglich noch die Mundharmonika, die Daugherty in dieser Aufnahme selber spielt. Neben den anmutigen Liebesliedern oder humoristischen Songs gibt es sehr besinnliche  aber auch dramatische Stücke wie Silver Bullet, ein Lied gegen die Waffenrechte: Shoot to kill, it’s the American way!

Daugherty  hat das alles brillant und originell instrumentiert und auch sehr gut für die beiden Solostimmen geschrieben. Annika Socolofsky und John Daugherty singen die trotz ihrer Nähe zum Volkslied sehr anspruchsvollen Parts engagiert und stimmlich tadellos. Absolut grandios musizieren die Musiker von

Dogs of Desire, einem Kammerensemble des Albany Symphony Orchestra, das von  Music Director David Alan Miller mit spontanem Elan geleitet wird.

Die gute Aufnahmequalität mit einem sehr präsenten und räumlich perfekt ausbalancierten Klang ist ein weiteres Plus dieser rundum empfehlenswerten Ersteinspielung.

The composition This Land Sings by American composer Michael Daugherty has been called Songs of Wandering, Love, & Protest. It comprises 11 original songs on mostly his own lyrics and six instrumental pieces, which are a tribute to the singer-songwriter and political activist Woody Guthrie, who « traveled through America with guitar and harmonica during the Great Depression and World War II to perform songs of hope and social justice », as Daugherty says. The pieces, arranged in the style of a radio show, are mostly based on the folk melodies that Guthrie reworked in his own songs.
This Land Sings is written for soprano, baritone and an ensemble of seven instruments, plus the harmonica, which Daugherty plays himself in this recording. Besides the graceful love songs or humorous songs there are very contemplative but also dramatic pieces like Silver Bullet, a song against the rights of arms: Shoot to kill, it’s the American way.
Daugherty orchestrated all this brilliantly and originally and also wrote very well for the two solo voices. Despite the closeness to the folk music, the vocal parts are very demanding. Annika Socolofsky and John Daugherty sing with commitment, and their performances are stylish and truly attractive. Dogs of Desire, a chamber ensemble of the Albany Symphony Orchestra, is conducted with spontaneous élan by Music Director David Alan Miller.
The good recording quality with a very present and perfectly balanced sound is another plus of this highly recommendable premiere recording.
