Man hat Lumbye den Johann Strauss des Nordens genannt, und dieser Vergleich ist sicherlich nicht ungerechtfertigt, denn es fehlte ihm in seiner beschwingten und farbigen Musik weder an Ideen noch am Talent zum Umsetzen dieser Ideen. Und doch unterscheidet sich Hans Christian Lumbye (1810-1874), Dirigent eines Orchesters, wie es auch Strauss leitete, und erster Musikdirektor des Tivolis in Kopenhagen, in seiner Art zu komponieren von den Österreichern. Seine Musik klingt etwas leichter und klarer als bei Strauss und Co.
Das wird in diesen vitalen und charmanten Aufnahmen, in denen auch Stücke von Strauss, Bellman und Lanner zu hören sind, deutlich. Concerto Copenhagen spielt auf historischen Instrumenten und will damit einen möglichst authentischen Klang reproduzieren.
Lumbye has been called the Johann Strauss of the North, and this comparison is certainly not unjustified, for he lacked neither ideas nor the talent to realize them in his buoyant and colorful music. And yet Hans Christian Lumbye (1810-1874), conductor of an orchestra like the one Strauss led, and first music director of the Tivoli in Copenhagen, differs from the Austrians in his way of composing. His music sounds somewhat lighter and clearer than that of Strauss and Co.
This is evident in these vital and charming performances, which also feature pieces by Strauss, Bellman and Lanner. Concerto Copenhagen plays on period instruments, aiming to reproduce as authentic a sound as possible.
