Die amerikanische Pianistin Lara Downes wendet sich auf ihrer neuen CD der Musik von Scott Joplin zu. Sie tut das ernsthaft, solo und in manchmal etwas absonderlichen Bearbeitungen auch mit unterschiedlicher Begleitung. Das Resultat lässt mich eher kalt, und ich denke wehmütig an meine Joplin-Lieblingsplatte mit André Previn und Itzhak Perlman.
Downes spielt nicht gerade grazil und nicht immer ganz so losgelöst und inspiriert wie ihre berühmten Vorgänger. Nicht selten fehlt der nötige Reichtum im Klang, in den Nuancen, in den Gefühlen, aber auch der Show-Charakter, also jenes Herzangeln, das in der Klassik mit Recht nicht angebracht, hier aber die Musik erst so richtig beleben würde.
On her new CD, American pianist Lara Downes plays music by Scott Joplin. She does this seriously, solo and in sometimes somewhat peculiar arrangements also with different accompaniment. The result leaves me rather unimpressed, and I think wistfully of my favorite Joplin recording with André Previn and Itzhak Perlman.
Downes’s playing is not exactly graceful and not always quite as free and inspired as the one of her famous predecessors. Not infrequently the necessary richness in sound, in nuances, in feelings is missing, but also the show character, that heart tugging playing which is rightly not appropriate in classical compositions, but here would really enliven the music.
