Metropolitan Opera New York
The General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Peter Gelb received the Ukrainian Medal of Merit from Volodymyr Zelensky and his wife, during the Ukrainian president’s trip to Washington. The medal was awarded to the General Director of New York’s Metropolitan Opera for his support since the beginning of the Russian invasion.
The Met, which has separated itself from pro-Putin artists, has organized two concerts in support of Ukraine, a fund-raising event inviting the Ukrainian First Lady and also a tour with the Polish National Opera bringing together Ukrainian musicians, refugees and Ukrainian members of European orchestras in the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra. Last spring, the Met unfurled the Ukrainian flag on its façade for four weeks and celebrated Ukrainian Independence Day on August 24.
