Mexican sopranos Paula Malagon and Jennifer Mariel won the First Women’s Grand Prize of the Maria Callas Competition 2023 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Among the men, no first prize was awarded; second place went to bass Raul Morales Velazco, also from Mexico.
Second place went to Brazilian soprano Giulia Moura, and third place went to Peruvian soprano Luz Merlina. Third place went to Chilean bass Pedro Alarcon Diaz. Brazilian sopranos Nubia Eunice and Letícia Moraes won the Toriba Musical Award.
The competition was part of the Callas Festival, which this year celebrated the soprano’s centennial.
