Mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton from the USA is BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2013. She was chosen by the Jury among 20 final competitors (selected among 400 candidates). Jamie Barton has a great voice, a beautiful warm timbre and she is singing with the heart. Obviously she has everything to make a big career.
Jamie Barton was born in Rome, Georgia, and studied at Shorter College there before attending Indiana University. From 2007-2009 she was a member of Houston Grand Opera Studio. Awards include the 2007 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, when she was a National Winner. In 2012 she received the Richard Tucker Career Grant from the Richard Tucker Foundation. She already sung at London’s Barbican Centre at Lyric Opera of Chicago and with Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich.
Established in 1983, the biennial competition Cardiff Singer of the World quickly became known throughout the classical world as the premier showcase for opera and concert singers at the start of their careers. Among former winners are Anja Harteros, Katarina Karnéus, Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Karita Mattila.
