Mexican mezzo-soprano Oralia Dominguez died on Monday (25th November) in Milan. Dominguez made her professional stage debut at the Mexico City Opera in 1950. She made her European debut in 1953 at London’s Wigmore Hall. In the same year she first appeared at ‘La Scala’ in Milan. In 1954 recorded the Verdi Requiem under the direction of Victor de Sabata. In 1954, she appeared throughout Europe with such conductors as Tullio Serafin, Igor Markevitch, Paul Kletzki and Herbert von Karajan. In 1955, she made her debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.
She performed the role of Erda in von Karajan’s DG recording of Wagner’s Ring with the Berlin Philharmonic. She recorded also some other programs for ‘Deutsche Grammophon’.
